A big of Background Info...
The feeding scheme was set up in 2009 in response to a very serious issue in Chintsa East school where students, on a daily basis, were unable to learn, play or live without the shadow of extreme hunger hanging over them. Sister school on the Wild Coast Schools Project, Bulugha Farm School, has had a well supported feeding scheme for several years - a scheme which sees every child in the school receiving two hot meals per day - which makes a huge difference.
The Friends of Chintsa, with support from international donors, have installed a kitchen and cook in Chintsa East school, and provide food for the scheme every week which has enabled each child at the school to receive one hot meal per day. These are often the only meals that the children receive and likely, the only reason that some of the children continue attending school.
The feeding scheme is a vital initiative in this rural school.
The Friends Fortnight Fast
The Friends Fortnight Fast is a new fundraising campaign which has been launched to raise money to allow the feeding scheme to continue. We need a minimum of £500 (that's approximately R7400 / $755) to keep the scheme running smoothly for the remainder of the year.
Our network of past volunteers and supporters currently holds around 1350 names and email addresses - that means that we need each and every person to donate only 37 pence (R5.50 / 55 cents) each to reach our goal.
We don't think that that's asking for a lot.
But if you're feeling more pro-active (or more generous), here's how you can get involved...
You can support the scheme in 3 ways:
1. Do the fast yourself
The campaign is designed for you, as a supporter of the Feeding Scheme, to raise money by taking part in the Fortnight Fast. It is not a total fast - all it asks is for you to give up your hot breakfast and dinner for 2 weeks. Our children get one hot meal per day - lunch - and that is what you can eat while taking part in the fast. All other meals must be cold food. More details on the fast and fundraising packs are available on the Friends of Chintsa website or you can email admin@friendsofchintsa.org.
2. Support Mike's fast
The Silver Fox (aka Mike Denison) has decided to go the whole hog! Mike will be fasting for one month and will eat only cold food for the entire month...ON THE CONDITION that we can raise a minimum of £100 (R1500 / $150) before he begins fasting. To donate money towards the initial £100 click here to give on GivenGain and reference "Mikes Fortnight Fast" or donate directly into the Friends bank account (see details below) and reference "Mike FF". Keep your eyes peeled for regular updates of the amounts raised and of Mikes fast (when he begins), on our social media channels.
3. Donate directly
If you want to support the scheme but don't think that you can manage to give up the comfort of your hot meals then please donate directly to the feeding scheme. Click here to donate through our fundraising website GivenGain (please select the "Feeding Scheme" as your project of choice) or see the Friends bank details below. Please reference Feeding Scheme on all donations.
The challenge is set! How will you support the Feeding Scheme?
